Abstract(s)
modelo PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and MetaAnalyses).
Childhood maltreatment affects many areas of a child’s life, as well as, impacts their normative development. This systematic literature review aims to understand the relationship between childhood maltreatment and emotional regulation strategies in adults. To conduct the review, the PRISMA model (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses) was used. The search for scientific articles was carried out using Scopus, PubMed and Web of Science databases, with a time interval between 2019 and 2024. In total, 12 scientific articles were included. Overall, the results support the existence of a positive association between child maltreatment and the adoption of maladaptive emotion regulation strategies, such as suppression and rumination. Furthermore, childhood maltreatment was also associated with greater difficulties in emotional regulation and less use of adaptive strategies, such as, cognitive reappraisal. The importance of the role of caregivers in the emotional development of children is also highlighted.
