Abstract(s)
O Capítulo I é referente à componente de investigação e consiste numa revisão bibliográfica
quer a nível nacional, quer a nível europeu.
O Capítulo II descreve a minha experiência profissionalizante no decorrer do estágio
This project, for obtaining the Master's Degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences, is divided into two chapters. Chapter I refers to my research component and consists of a literature review named “Study of the toxic effects of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in companion animals”. This theme becomes relevant nowadays since the general panorama of Portuguese families already includes animals, such as dogs and cats. Thus, animal health care follows its growing trend, which sometimes involves the administration of drugs (including non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs); however, despite their therapeutic potential, these substances can present adverse reactions. In this regard, information was gathered from the last decade about toxicity, therapeutic and toxic doses, and also treatment measures to be applied in the event of an overdose with the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs approved in Portugal, for this target population. It was therefore verified that notifications to Pharmacovigilance Systems have been increasing, both nationally and at European level. It was also observed that, since 2010, clinical trials have been carried out, both short and long term, with most of the drugs studied, and case reports have been published on situations of accidental overdose, whether at home or in veterinary clinics, and even due to dispensing errors in community pharmacy. Despite the indications mentioned in the package leaflet in the event of an overdose to apply general supportive treatment, cases with other therapeutic measures were reported, presenting advantages. Thus, it was concluded that, although information in this area continues to emerge and drugs are increasingly developed in order to avoid toxicity, there is still a way to go so that their safety is optimized and their adverse reactions reduced, mainly in long-term therapies. Chapter II describes my professional experience during the curricular internship in Community Pharmacy at Farmácia Sousa Trincão (Abrantes), between March and July 2021, under the guidance of Dr. Maria do Rosário Sousa e Trincão. This learning period was extremely important for my training as a pharmacist, being especially challenging due to the current pandemic context.
