Abstract(s)
Introduction: The Incredible Years® was developed by Carolyn Webster-Stratton in the end of the 20th century, during which there was a paradigm shift in child psychopathology. The prevalence growth of behaviour disturbances made the creation of a program necessary with the purpose of promoting healthier social and emotional development of children. The Incredible Years® consists in weekly sessions where the parents have the opportunity to reinforce their parental skills and foment their involvement in the daily experience of their children. Objectives: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the impact of the Incredible Years in the beliefs and parental skills of the participants and the global behaviour of their children. Material and Methods: Sample: n=19. Inclusion Criteria: Parents of children followed in children’s psychiatry, with ages between 6 and 12 years and that showed behaviour perturbations. Exclusion criteria: parents with psicopatology that prevent their participation in group and the incapacity of attending at least 80% of the sessions. Used Instruments: Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire – Por, Escala de Crenças sobre Punição Física e Sentido de Competência Parental, applied before and after the program. As well as the weekly evaluation survey and the final evaluation questionnaire. Statistical analysis with Statistical Package for Social Sciences® version 25. Results and Discussion: After participating in the program, there was a positive evolution in the parent’s beliefs and competences and in the behaviour of their children. Conclusion: The Incredible Years® has proved to be an important non-pharmacological tool in the management of children's behaviours and improving parental skills and the parent-child relationship.
