A pandemia de Covid-19 transformou profundamente o quotidiano das populações, resultando em sérias consequências, como a sobrecarga dos sistemas de saúde e um elevado número de mortes. Nos primeiros meses, o desconhecimento sobre o vírus dificultou a resposta imediata das organizações de saúde, incluindo a OMS e as autoridades nacionais. Medidas como confinamentos prolongados e o teletrabalho tornaram-se comuns, enquanto escolas e espaços de lazer foram fechados para conter a propagação do vírus. Nesse contexto, a necessidade de informações fidedignas tornou- se crucial para garantir a eficácia das medidas governamentais e para controlar o avanço da doença.
Assim sendo, os jornalistas desempenharam um papel fundamental como agentes mediadores entre os governos, as autoridades de saúde e o público em geral. No entanto, o seu trabalho também foi afetado pelas restrições, com muitos profissionais a adaptar-se ao teletrabalho e a recorrer à tecnologia para contactar as fontes. O aumento da procura por informações acelerou o ritmo das notícias, exigindo um esforço redobrado.
Este estudo reflete sobre os desafios éticos enfrentados pelo jornalismo durante a pandemia, com base em entrevistas realizadas a jornalistas de imprensa. As entrevistas revelaram uma maior dependência de fontes oficiais, ao invés de fontes secundárias, para garantir a precisão das informações e um reforço no processo de verificação, em resposta à proliferação de notícias falsas. Existiu, também, a preocupação de evitar exposição de pessoas enlutadas, dando preferência a histórias de recuperação. A investigação conclui que, no contexto português, o Sindicato dos Jornalistas desempenhou um papel ativo ao alertar os profissionais para a importância de uma conduta ética rigorosa na cobertura da pandemia. Não foram registados casos graves de falhas ou erros significativos. Pelo contrário, os jornalistas adaptaram-se às novas formas de fazer jornalismo num ambiente de confinamento, respeitando o código deontológico e mantendo o compromisso de transmitir informações precisas e de confiança ao público.
The Covid-19 pandemic has profoundly transformed people's daily lives, resulting in serious consequences such as the overloading of health systems and a high number of deaths. In the first few months, the lack of knowledge about the virus made it difficult for health organisations, the WHO and national authorities, to respond immediately. Measures such as prolonged lockdowns and teleworking became common, while schools and leisure spaces were closed to contain the spread of the virus. In this context, the need for reliable information has become crucial to ensure the effectiveness of government measures and to control the spread of the disease. Therefore, journalists have played a key role as intermediaries between governments, health authorities and the public. But their work has also been affected by the restrictions, with many professionals adapting to teleworking and using technology to contact sources. The increased demand for information has accelerated the pace of news, requiring an extra effort. This study reflects on the ethical challenges faced by journalism during the pandemic, based on interviews conducted with press journalists. The interviews revealed a greater reliance on official sources, rather than secondary sources, to ensure the accuracy of information and a strengthening of the verification process in response to the proliferation of fake news. There was also a concern to avoid exposing bereaved people, favouring stories of recovery. The research concludes that in the Portuguese context, the Journalists' Union played an active role in alerting professionals to the importance of rigorous ethical conduct when covering the pandemic. There were no serious cases of failure or significant errors. On the contrary, journalists have adapted to the new ways of doing journalism in a confined environment, respecting the Code of Ethics and maintaining their commitment to transmitting accurate and reliable information to the public.
