Abstract(s)
A formação académica
The pharmaceutical profession is versatile, requiring technical and scientific skills to contribute to different areas of health and science. Multidisciplinary academic training prepares future professionals to carry out their activities both in hospital pharmacy and community pharmacy and to collaborate in the development of projects in the field of scientific research. The hospital pharmacist performs a crucial role in a multidisciplinary healthcare team in a hospital environment. In this field, the pharmacist is responsible for the acquisition, management, preparation, and distribution of medicines, in addition to providing important clinical, scientific, and financial information for the health system, including the evaluation of therapeutic innovation and the monitoring of clinical trials. On the other hand, the community pharmacist plays a fundamental role in managing therapy, administering medications, identifying people at risk, early detection of diseases, and promoting healthy lifestyles due to their privileged position in the community. This work is divided into three distinct chapters, with Chapter I referring to the scientific research component, Chapter II concerning professional experience in hospital pharmacy, and Chapter III related to professional experience in the community pharmacy. The first chapter consists of a systematic review developed in the area of post-stroke neuroprotection based on clinical trials carried out in the last seven years and pre-clinical studies published in the last five years. This study provided current evidence regarding the neuroprotective efficacy of three pharmacological groups: statins, progestins, and antiepileptics, taking into account various routes of administration. Through this systematic review, it was possible to determine, within each group, the pharmacological substances that have shown a higher impact in terms of neuroprotective capacity and to propose potential approaches for future studies based on promising results in terms of neuroprotection promoting, neuritic remodelling and post-stroke functional recovery, particularly with regard to potential routes of administration, new therapeutic approaches, in specific therapeutic approaches based on the use of stem cells in combination with some medications from these groups, and the inclusion of innovative initiatives, such as applying adaptive design to clinical trials, in order to overcome the lack of success seen in recent clinical trials. In the second chapter, an approach was made to the internship in Hospital Pharmacy, which was carried out in the Pharmaceutical Services of the University Hospital Centre Cova da Beira, in the period between February 6th and March 31st, 2023, totalling 352 hours, under the guidance of the Pharmaceutical Care Division director, Professor Maria Olímpia Fonseca. This chapter describes the skills acquired during the internship as well as each of the main areas of pharmaceutical services at this hospital centre: the Acquisition and Logistics Sector, Unit Dose Sector, Outpatient Department, and Pharmacotechnics Sector. The third chapter describes the experience of the Community Pharmacy internship, carried out at Farmácia São João, in Covilhã, from April 3rd to June 20th, 2021, with a total of 448 hours, under the supervision of Dr. Dina Esteves. This chapter describes the management and operation of the pharmacy, specifying the tasks and activities performed during the internship.
