Abstract(s)
This research investigated the relationship between religion, migration and youth, in order to understand the elements that constitute the life trajectories of young Brazilian migrants in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area (AML). The analysis of the proposed objectives was made having the theoretical-methodological framework produced from the dialogue between the classic and contemporary contributions of Sociology. The qualitative investigation was constituted by different observations and insertions in the field of the AML Evangelical Churches resulting in a network with young people. The interviewed members of this network were the subjects who contributed to the elaboration of this thesis. The in-depth interviews were used to capture the lives of thirteen young people, thus addressing different issues and themes, narrated from the subjects' own experiences and conceptions. From the oral sources, changes were observed regarding the religious practices of the subjects after the migratory process, when the religious community starts to assume an excessively important role in sociability, influencing even in the decision to stay or not in Portugal. The migratory process is made of different motivations, with no single or exclusive factor, but a series of elements: intentions, possibilities and expectations of young people to live in Portugal. The cultural practices of our subjects undergo drastic changes. Sociability is reconfigured according to life conditions. Sometimes, young migrants have more possibilities of leisure, being the religious community itself one of the most relevant alternatives. Dialoguing with the insertions of young migrants, youth cultures lead us to understand the issues that relate to their daily lives and how they experience it, where they are inserted in constant processes that directly influence the subjects' (re)construction. The relationship between the migratory process of young Brazilians and both, cultural and religious practices, are fundamental and strategic in shaping the life path and in the understanding the everyday life in Portugal.
