Abstract(s)
A sociedade estabeleceu
Fashion plays an important role in expressing the identity of an individual or community – as experts in the social sciences analyze. In the music industry, artists explore their identity – focusing on gender identity – through clothing, developing personas or alter egos that reflect a specific visual aesthetic in their stage performance. Fashion becomes a tool for the expression of the performer's identity. However, fashion as a social and cultural phenomenon is subject to interpretations that vary over time and place. Society has established binary norms of gender identity based on biological sex; therefore, some individuals question and challenge these norms in their search for freedom of expression and unconventional identity. Fashion, along with performance, is used as a form of empowerment against the norms imposed by society. Various movements, subcultures, and performative identities have emerged to question, challenge, and transform normative notions that are reflected in gender concepts, creating safe spaces that provide a sense of belonging and identity freedom to their audience. Music artists use fashion as a tool to express their personas and alter egos. Through aesthetics and clothing, music performers communicate their essence and personality. Through case studies of artists such as David Bowie, Harry Styles, and António Variações, it is possible to observe how fashion can be used to explore different identities and gender expressions. In summary, fashion is an essential tool for music performers to express their identity and communicate with their audience – providing a comfortable environment for individual expression.
