Abstract(s)
The institutionalization of the elderly in homes is a problem of contemporary society because it involuntarily leads to social isolation and intergenerational segregation. In Praia da Vitória, on the island of Terceira, this phenomenon is exacerbated by the location and organization of both existing nursing homes, with residents being disconnected from community life, resulting in a gradual loss of connection with other age groups and the surrounding society. The analysis of the urban fabric of Praia da Vitória highlights an increasing pressure on residential structures for the elderly, accompanied by a lack of spaces for interaction between different generations. The city's population is increasingly aging, yet it possesses a rich cultural heritage and has underutilized areas with potential for creating environments that rehabilitate intergenerational bonds. This study delves into the issue of social disconnection, proposing an architectural reconception in response to the emerging needs for inclusion and active engagement of this population within the community. The proposal is based on the creation of a nursing home that transcends the traditional function of accommodation, rising as a catalyst for social interaction between generations. The project revolves around multifunctional social spaces, designed to foster intergenerational meetings, allowing the sharing of experiences and the reintegration of the elderly into the community. The formal and material composition of the building balances functionality and aesthetics, with special attention to light, color, and materiality, fundamental elements to create a welcoming and safe atmosphere. The application of universal design principles ensures full accessibility and comfort for residents, providing an inclusive space adaptable to various physical and cognitive conditions. This project aims to redefine the typology of nursing homes, presenting an architectural model that promotes social inclusion and can be replicated in other contexts. When a dialogue between generations is established, it not only improves the quality of life for the elderly but also creates a platform for interaction that strengthens the bonds between generations, thereby affirming architecture as an effective means of social inclusion and promoting intergenerational cohesion.
