Abstract(s)
Portuguese population is aging, making it challenging for caregivers to take care of them. The modern lifestyle less and less allows giving attention to the elderly, either due to lack of time in daily life, or due to the distance that caregivers are from the elderly. [Car16]. In the last years, the computer world has developed exponentially, taking into account that the majority of the population uses digital devices and computerized solutions, that are very useful in everyday life. Since digital devices are used all over the world, the use of a system for monitoring tasks becomes a great help for caregivers and the elderly. Nowadays there are systems that can help in some tasks, however they perform isolated tasks or are aimed to younger users, throughout this work we are predisposed to solve these problems. Throughout this work we describe existing examples of small and comfortable devices for the user, however, they are poorly suitable for people with difficulties in dealing with digital devices, as is the case of most elderly people. The system developed in this work, intends to correct the flaws presented. In order to facilitate is usage by an elderly we tried to develop an easy an intuitive system. It is also characteristic of this device, to make available various tasks simultaneously or individually, making the use of different systems unnecessary. The tasks made available by the developed system were divided into two modules. One of them was the alert system, taking medication and measuring vital signs. In the other one, was verification and control of energy costs (water, electricity and gas), verification and control of automatic irrigation and indoor temperature control (allows to turn on / off a heater when necessary). Other system utility is to allow the caregiver to understand if there is an anomaly in the elderly’s daily life, in order to know if any of the usual tasks is being performed at a different time than expected. After creating the modules described above, tests were carried out in order to verify the utility and functionality of each of the modules in isolation. During the creation of this system, there was no direct contact with the elderly; however, the tests were carried out taking into account difficulties that we consider likely that these people have.
