Redes sociais e qualidade de vida dos idosos: uma revisão e análise crítica da literatura

dc.description.abstractDiversos estudos documentam a importância das redes sociais para a qualidade de vida (QV) na velhice. Este artigo procede a uma revisão e análise crítica da literatura sobre a relação entre as redes sociais dos idosos e a sua QV/bem-estar. Mediante pesquisa em motores de busca interdisciplinares [Web of Knowledge, Scopus, Google Académico, Science Direct e Biblioteca do Conhecimento Online (b-on)], seguida de análise aprofundada dos 37 trabalhos, selecionados tendo em conta o seu conteúdo, o contexto geográfico da pesquisa e a data de publicação, foram observadas algumas tendências. Em primeiro lugar, as redes de amigos contribuem mais do que as redes familiares para a QV/bemestar dos idosos. Também foi evidenciado o contributo positivo de mais do que um tipo de relação (por exemplo, relações de amizade e, simultaneamente, relações familiares) para a QV/bem-estar das pessoas mais velhas. Por fim, os estudos científicos assinalam o impacto positivo da proximidade emocional na QV/bem-estar. Constatou-se a falta de estudos longitudinais que permitissem observar a causalidade entre as características das redes e a QV/bem-estar. Escasseiam também pesquisas acerca da relação entre redes sociais e QV/bem-estar em idosos que vivem sós. Um aspeto problemático prende-se com o facto de poucos trabalhos apresentarem a definição de QV adotada, assim como a justificação da forma de operacionalização do conceito.pt_PT
dc.description.abstractSeveral studies have documented the importance of social networks for quality of life (QL) in old age. This article presents a review and critical analysis of the literature on the relationship between the social networks of the elderly and their QL/well-being. A survey using interdisciplinary search engines [Web of Knowledge, Scopus, Scholar Google, Science Direct and Online Knowledge Library (b-on)], followed by an in-depth examination of the 37 documents subsequently identified, selected based on content, the geographical context of the study and its publication date, suggested a number of tendencies. In the first place, networks of friends have a greater impact on the QL/wellbeing of elderly persons than family networks. Secondly, the positive effect of the existence of more than one type of relationship was revealed (such as simultaneous friendships and family relationships). Finally, literature suggests emotional closeness has a positive impact on QL/well-being. The present study exposed the lack of longitudinal studies into the causality between network characteristics and QL/well-being. It also revealed the lack of research on the relationship between social networks and QL/well-being in elderly persons living alone. One problematic aspect relates to the fact that few studies provide a definition of the QL measures they adopt, or the rationale behind the manner of their operationalization of the concept.pt_PT
