Abstract(s)
This work aims to respond to the intention presented by the Fundação Caixa Agrícola do Noroeste (FCAN) to rehabilitate the Solar dos Quesados, an 18th-century manor house in the city of Viana do Castelo, into an Art Museum for the same foundation. The vacant building, since 2009, shows signs of an advanced state of degradation and its intervention was declared urgent because it was flagged by public health in 2017. In architecture, the filed of rehabilitation is increasingly complex, since in addition to all the singularities of the architectural work, other historical, cultural and memory issues are also framed. This dissertation presents an investigation of the questions that arose in the approach to the house and the typology of the new function, namely about the building and the typology that characterizes it, as well as the museum typology. It ends whit a proposal for intervention in the case study, which assesses the compatibility between the issues addressed ant the intention of FCAN. Thus, it is presented the process of recognition of the house achieved by comparing the architectural survey and the documentation found about the place and the manor houses. Followed by the process of understanding the museological typology, as a function of public interest with its own requirements and obligations. Ending with the proposal of a small museum that can answer the questions raised, and that can transform what is history and memory, into an opportunity for reinvention.
