Abstract(s)
Introduction: Mental health has been a topic gaining prominence over the years, due to the increasing attention given to psychological disorders in various contexts, particularly in higher education, as new students enter a novel and challenging environment. Given this growing relevance, the present research project aimed to assess the levels of psychopathology and wellbeing among university students, as well as to understand the relationship between their wellbeing, psychopathological symptoms, and the emotional regulation strategies they adopt. Methods: The study involved the collaboration of students from various regions of Portugal who were enrolled in higher education programs across different fields of study and were at least 18 years old. The participants completed a sociodemographic questionnaire, as well as the following scales: EADS-21, adapted for the Portuguese population by Pais-Ribeiro et al. (2004); BERQ, adapted by Guedes et al. (2022); and EMMBEP, adapted by Monteiro et al. (2012). Results: Low levels of anxiety, depression, and stress were found among the students, along with positive indicators of well-being within the sample. Additionally, a positive association was observed between well-being and emotional regulation strategies, and a negative correlation was identified between psychopathological symptoms and well-being. Thus, we found that psychopathology and emotional regulation strategies demonstrated a significant explanatory capacity for the psychological well-being of the students in this study.
