Reconhecendo a
This master’s dissertation analyses the importance of the televised debates between party leaders for the 2025 Legislative Elections. Few studies can be found that focus specifically on televised debates, making them a rarity within the Portuguese academic landscape. Recognizing the potential influence of these debates on the formation of public opinion and voting intentions, this study aims not only to fill the existing gap by providing an exploratory analysis of how debates shape voters’ perceptions and affect electoral outcomes, but also to understand the influence they had in 2025, following one of the most widely mediatic political cases of the recent years. To achieve these objectives, a methodological approach was adopted, including a theoretical revision, questionnaire surveys and the analysis of the relationship between the broadcast of the debates and the evolution of voting intentions. Questionnaire surveys were conducted with the aim of collecting data on voters' opinions regarding pre-election television debates, how they influence their voting intentions, and even how they perceive the debates. The relationship analysed was between five polls and four groups of televised debates, in order to understand how the parties performed in terms of voters' voting intentions throughout the debate season and the broadcast of the debates and subsequently relate this data to the official election results of May 18, 2025. The results of this study will provide a comprehensive understanding of the relevance of televised debates in the context of the 2025 legislative elections, highlighting their importance in electoral and media dynamics as well as in the final outcomes. The combined use of methods ensured a robust analysis, offering valuable insights for politicians, analysts, and the general public on the significance of televised debates in contemporary Portuguese democracy.
