Abstract(s)
Crowdfunding has emerged as a significant alternative to traditional financing in Portugal, reflecting a growing trend in the appreciation of this method among entrepreneurs and investors. By analyzing the scarcity of research in the field and its increasing popularity as an innovative and disruptive form of financing, this study aims to investigate the evolution of crowdfunding in the country between 2014 and 2020, thereby producing a systematic review of the literature on crowdfunding in Portugal. Initially, the focus is on the fundamental question of how the literature on crowdfunding has evolved and what emerging research areas are present. To this end, the systematic review addresses four thematic areas: research focus—concepts; research method—quantitative/qualitative identification; geographical area—countries under study; and innovation—future research areas. The research reveals that, despite the growth of crowdfunding, significant gaps in available knowledge persist. The importance of investor behavior is highlighted, which is influenced by the security of platforms and existing regulations. This study also explores the increasing public attention to crowdfunding, exemplified by notable campaigns such as the funding of the nurses’ strike in Portugal. Through a comprehensive case study, which includes a survey of representatives from the main crowdfunding platforms in Portugal, this study examines pertinent issues such as legislation and market dynamics. The research, composed of 41 questions distributed across four categories, provides valuable insights into platform details, information about companies and projects, investor perspectives, and the financing process. Furthermore, an analysis of the motivations driving entrepreneurs to opt for collaborative financing through the Raize platform is developed, highlighting the growing adoption of this peer-to-peer crowdfunding model. Utilizing a qualitative multiple-case approach, the study investigates the factors influencing entrepreneurs' decisions to utilize this platform as an alternative to bank financing. The results indicate that the choice of the Raize platform is determined by a combination of factors, including financial accessibility, trust in the investor community, ease of use of the platform, and competitive fees. This study not only enriches the literature on crowdfunding and entrepreneurship but also provides practical guidance for those seeking funding through new systems that support innovation and business growth in Portugal. Additionally, it is suggested that the integration of crowdfunding with emerging technologies, such as blockchain, may represent a disruptive shift, promoting future innovations and research in the field. Although crowdfunding has gained visibility, the investigation reveals that it remains relatively unknown to the general public The authors conclude that crowdfunding should not be viewed as a replacement for banking institutions but as a complementary mechanism that provides accessibility, process agility, and the ability to achieve quick recognition for projects and companies. Moreover, this approach facilitates the identification of investment opportunities and enhances confidence in subsequent interactions with banks and investors. In summary, research on crowdfunding in Portugal underscores not only its growing importance as an alternative financing method but also the need for deeper studies addressing its nuances. Crowdfunding presents itself as an innovative solution that not only facilitates access to funding but also strengthens the business ecosystem, supporting the sustainability of companies and promoting an environment conducive to innovation and growth in the Portuguese market.
