Abstract(s)
Attitudes towards sexuality are influenced by cultural constructions of gender, particularly femininity and masculinity. This study aims to validate the Sexuality Attitudes Questionnaire for people with Intellectual Disabilities (ID) in a sample of Portuguese adults, and to compare the attitudes towards sexuality of people with ID based on sociodemographic variables. The study involved 426 individuals (75.8% women and 23.7% men), with an average age of 27.81 (SD = 13.19), who answered a Sociodemographic Questionnaire, General Population Sexuality Attitude Questionnaires (QASG-M and H), and Sexuality Attitude Questionnaires for women (QASDI-M) and men (QASDI-H) with ID. An Exploratory Factor Analysis was conducted using principal component extraction and Varimax rotation. Items with a factor loading greater than .40 were retained, and the scree plot criterion was used. For the QASDI-M, 2 factors were produced, with a = .93 and explained variance of 31.75%, and a = .66 and explained variance of 6.14%. For the QASDI-H, 2 factors were produced, with a = .94 and explained variance of 33.24% for Factor 1, and a = .72 and explained variance of 6.22% for Factor 2. Convergent validity was verified through positive correlations between QASG-M and QASDI-M, and QASG-H and QASDI-H. The women show more positive attitudes than men towards the sexuality of people with ID. The instruments demonstrate good psychometric qualities.
