Abstract(s)
This work has as primary objective to deepen and investigate, scientifically, both theoretical and empirical level the relationship (potential) between the variables job satisfaction and health (physical and mental) in a sample of Portuguese and Brazilian participants. The conducted study and document begin with theoretical contributions organized by the two main themes. The empirical level begins with the exploration and analysis of how the two variables are correlated or not with each other. Wanted thereafter study whether the two variables set, or not, of itself, a predictive type of relationship, ie if explores, on the one hand, if the job satisfaction predicts whether or not variables and physical health mental and, moreover, variable physical and mental health predict whether or not dimensions of job satisfaction. Finally, it explores the existence of statistically significant relationships between the dimensions of job satisfaction due to some socio-demographic and professional factors such as gender, age, nationality and area of activity of the institutions where the respondents perform labor functions. To assess job satisfaction we used the satisfaction scale at work - EST reduced version (Smith, 2002) consists of five different dimensions. To measure the physical and mental health resorted to scale physical and mental health - SF-36 (Ware & Sherbourne, 1992). In addition to these two questionnaires was even administered a sociodemographic questionnaire. The three questionnaires were answered, validly, 1097 participants. The results of analyzes carried out to the data collected showed the existence of significant correlation in most dimensions of satisfaction in working with the dimensions of physical and mental health. There was, in particular, that only one dimension of job satisfaction was predictive of the first two dimensions of physical and mental health, and in other dimensions was found that more than one dimension of job satisfaction was predictive of physical and mental health. Conversely, it was found that more than one dimension of physical and mental health was predictive of each dimension of job satisfaction. Regarding the analysis performed to verify the existence of differences among participants, the variable gender showed absence of any statistically significant difference. In the opposite situation, age was in some intervals, statistically significant differences, showing that older individuals are, in general, more satisfied in all dimensions of job satisfaction, compared to younger individuals. With regard to nationality, the results show that the Brazilian participants are generally more satisfied with the wages and promotions, compared to the Portuguese participants. With regard to the institution's activity area, the results show that participants who integrate organizations belonging to the service sector are generally more satisfied with co-workers and the managers compared to participating organizations belonging the industrial sector. Conclusively, it is considered that the results of this research, with its limits and capital gains, may constitute a relevant significant contribution to the scientific community of the area of psychology, both the organizational area as health, the level of better understanding and study of the deepening of the (potential) association and analysis (s) influence (s) between professional variables such as job satisfaction, and personal variables such as health (physical and mental).
