Abstract(s)
Emotional intelligence has gained increasing popularity among academics especially in the business sector and several researchers have supported the link between the concept of emotional intelligence and leadership. After some research it was found that emotional intelligence had not received attention from researchers in the non-profit field. This study aims to identify the levels of emotional intelligence and leadership styles predominantly adopted by non-profit leaders, to compare the emotional intelligence levels of paid versus unpaid leaders, and to verify whether there is a relationship between the level of emotional intelligence and the most used leadership style in the non-profit landscape. Two questionnaires were applied to a sample of 96 leaders from various non-profit organizations in Portugal. These individuals responded to the Wong and Law's WLEIS Emotional Intelligence (adapted) and to the Bass and Avolio Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (adapted). The sample obtained an overall emotional intelligence average of 76.04 out of 96 possible points and an average of 2.430 out of 4 possible points in global leadership. It was verified the dependence between emotional intelligence and the most chosen leadership style according to the leader's gender, age group, seniority in the non-profit organization, qualifications and leader type (paid vs. unpaid). It was also checked which leadership style was most commonly found and if there was a relationship between the levels of emotional intelligence and the levels of transformational leadership. From statistical tests, it was concluded that the level of emotional intelligence was significantly dependent on the leader's gender, which had higher values for the female gender and on the type of leader, with higher values for the unpaid leaders. The predominant leadership style in the non-profit organizations studied was the transformational leadership but no relationship was found between transformational leadership and emotional intelligence.
