Abstract(s)
Nowadays, a large quantity of data is available on digital social networks; such widespread exposure of aspects of public and private lives rises questions regarding with the surveillance that users are (potentially) exposed to. With the progressive use of Facebook network, the surveillance problem acquires new shapes and the electronic surveillance becomes even more either intensive and extensive, which places new theoretical and conceptual challenges. Looking for answers to some of these challenges, it is intended in this dissertation, applying a qualitative methodology, to map the perceptions that Facebook users have on the kind of surveillance that they might be exposed to, considering several analytical dimensions: the importance given to surveillance; the social and institutional surveillance; the management of data available to friends and acquaintances versus the concern with privacy; the Facebook privacy policy and the modalities of surveillance resistance.
