Os meios rurais possuem memórias culturais e artísticas que, sendo devidamente exploradas,
poderão contribuir para o desenvolvimento territorial. Nesse sentido, a presente dissertação
pretende propor a reabilitação de um armazém de vinhos, adaptando para um novo uso a
edificação localizada no lugar do Castelo, sito na freguesia de Fornos, no concelho de Castelo de
Paiva.
Considerando o movimento crescente de turistas que nos últimos anos se tem verificado na
região, achou-se por bem idealizar um projeto que, partindo de uma edificação industrial
atualmente disfuncional, ao abandono, sem enquadramento paisagístico e desagradável à vista,
fosse capaz de a recriar arquitetonicamente, atribuindo-lhe um uso diferente, reunindo
condições ótimas de conforto, sem que por isso se perdesse a memória do objetivo/função
original. Articulando a linguagem arquitetónica do edifício existente com a circunstância
contemporânea, tomou-se como objetivo encontrar uma nova imagem e uma nova dinâmica
para a edificação e área envolvente, tornando-a apelativa para a atividade turística.
A edificação em análise, de tipologia industrial, foi construída em 1968. Sendo a região de
Castelo de Paiva uma zona de produção de Vinho Verde, serviu inicialmente para a produção de
vinho e aguardante, e mais tarde apenas para armazém.
Trata-se de um edifício de dimensão considerável, que está há vários anos ao abandono, mas se
insere numa zona bastante procurada por turistas, que é valorizada pela proximidade dos rios
Douro e Paiva e as suas praias fluviais, da Ilha dos Amores, uma das atrações maiores do
concelho, bem como dos Passadiços do Paiva, em Arouca. Optou-se por adaptar o armazém
para Alojamento Local, como forma de atrair turistas e melhorar a oferta, construindo um
equipamento com identidade, que guarde a memória do passado e da utilização anterior do
edifício, mas que seja adequado às circunstâncias e expectativas atuais, não esquecendo a
relação com a envolvente. Procurou-se assim a realização de um projeto que respeitasse o
carácter original do edificado, de forma a garantir que não e´ esquecida a sua origem, mantendo
a ligação do seu passado arquitetónico com a contemporaneidade.
A arquitetura é a arte de criar soluções capazes de responder a problemas e necessidades reais,
pelo que é objetivo deste trabalho provar que e´ possível salvaguardar edifícios de tipologia
industrial sem que para isso a atribuição de novos usos seja prejudicial, mas antes uma
oportunidade para encontrar novas soluções. Por outro lado, a adaptação, como proposto nesta
dissertação, deste edificado a um novo uso, além da melhoria arquitetónica, estética e funcional,
contribui para a valorização da identidade local, não só pela preservação do construído como
também pela utilização de materiais da região.
Rural areas possess cultural and artistic memories that, if properly explored, can contribute to territorial development. In this sense, this dissertation aims to propose the rehabilitation of a wine warehouse, adapting the building located in the place of “Castelo”, situated in the parish of “Fornos”, in the county of “Castelo de Paiva”. Considering the increasing movement of tourists that has been observed in the region in recent years, it was deemed appropriate to conceive a project that, starting from a currently dysfunctional, abandoned, and visually unappealing industrial building, could architecturally recreate it by assigning a different use, providing optimal comfort conditions without losing the memory of its original purpose/function. By articulating the architectural language of the existing building with the contemporary context, the objective was to find a new image and dynamics for the building and its surroundings, making it appealing for tourism activities. The building under analysis, of industrial typology, was constructed in 1968. Being in the region of “Castelo de Paiva”, an area known for the production of green wine, it initially served for the production of wine and spirits, later solely as a warehouse. It is a sizable building that has been abandoned for several years but is located in a highly sought-after area by tourists, valued for its proximity to the Douro and Paiva rivers, their river beaches, the “Ilha dos Amores”, one of the major attractions of the county, as well as the “Passadiços do Paiva” in Arouca. The decision was made to adapt the warehouse into a Local Accommodation as a way to attract tourists and improve the offerings, creating a facility with its own identity that preserves the memory of the building's past and previous use, while being suitable for current circumstances and expectations, without neglecting the relationship with the surroundings. The aim was to carry out a project that respects the original character of the building, ensuring its origins are not forgotten and maintaining the connection between its architectural past and contemporaneity. Architecture is the art of creating solutions capable of addressing real problems and needs, so the objective of this work is to prove that it is possible to safeguard industrial buildings without detrimental consequences when assigning them new uses, but rather as an opportunity to find innovative solutions. Furthermore, the adaptation proposed in this dissertation, in addition to the architectural, aesthetic, and functional improvement, contributes to the valorisation of the local identity, not only through the preservation of the structure itself but also through the utilization of local materials.
