Contudo, persistem
The rapid growth of the migrant population in the Portuguese context, especially in recent decades, highlights the importance of understanding the challenges that this population faces and analysing the initiatives and policies developed with the aim of helping their integration into the host communities. This will be the focus of this dissertation, which analyses the integration of immigrants in the city of Fundão, a municipality in a low-density region characterised by the rapid growth of the migrant population in its territory and often presented as an example of good practices in the integration and reception of migrants. Through a literature review, document analysis and semi-structured interviews, this dissertation applies the integration analysis model developed by Ager & Strang (2008) with the aim of analysing: (i) the specific challenges of the integration of immigrants in Fundão and (ii) the factors that influence the migrants’ integration process and their experiences in this territory. This study concludes that the integration measures promoted by Fundão, with the objective of revitalising the region, have a visibly positive effect, with particular emphasis on the role of the Centre for Migration. However, structural difficulties persist, namely in access to employment and housing, aggravated by job insecurity, language barriers, the bureaucracy associated with residence status, and the limitations of the housing market.
