Abstract(s)
Deste modo, a cooperação e a consciencialização, enquanto dimensÔes do desempenho
Family businesses are important in the economy of each country and many of these businesses belong to the concept of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). This study aims to investigate whether organizational commitment in family SMEs influence the contextual performance of its employees. To accomplish this, our research adopted a quantitative and exploratory approach which focused on eight SMEs (cases) located in the district of Guarda, considered to be family owned and exclusively for one or more families. The data collection instrument for this study was based on a questionnaire handed out to a total of 101 employees of the eight selected businesses. The results showed that in family SMEs affective commitment influences positively the contextual performance as employees of these small businesses have an emotional connection in the context of where they live. In that way, cooperation will have an awareness, while dimensions of contextual performance, have are most relevant given the active role associated with affective commitment. This research contributes to the advancement of the theory with regard to the relationship between organizational commitment and contextual performance in SMEs of family structure. In practical terms this study shows that there is a strong relationship between affective commitment and contextual performance of employees, which presents a major role in these businesses. It is therefore necessary for these companies awareness to this type of organizational commitment, as more affective commitment influences the performance of their workers. If the owners of these family SMEs are sensitive to this issue, they will achieve positive results in the performance of their employees, which in turn will contribute to the success of the business. Family SMEs must find strategies to increase affective commitment, so that will contribute to the attitudes and behaviors of employees. The higher the practice of organizational awareness and cooperation among employees, the greater the benefits for both employees and the business.
