Abstract(s)
A grande maioria
as reações do doente e familiares.
Breaking Bad News (BBN) is part of the doctor´s routine and it is necessary that during their educational years the students learn and develop communication skills to perform the task, that they know how to identify the difficulties and emotions involved, and that they develop adaptive coping mechanisms to manage these situations. The aims of the present study were to observe the students´ perception of the task of BBN, the associated emotion, and the strategies that can be used to manage its impact. This is a descriptiveexploratory study, based on a mixed methodology, mainly qualitative, carried out with 5th year medical students. Based on the results, it was found that students acknowledge the relevance and difficulty of the task, and the importance of teaching techniques/protocols to perform it. The majority of the participants reported having observed BBN at least once and recognize the need for more practical approaches in teaching this theme. They identified as important aspects for an appropriate BBN the preparation of the task and knowing how to deal with the patient and family´s reaction. The students associated emotions such as empathy and sadness with BBN and valued coping strategies focused on emotion and emotional detachment to manage these emotional impacts on doctors. The students evaluated a module of teaching BBN in a favourable light and the results indicated a positive influence of these teaching on student´s assessment of their knowledge, competences and level of confidence to perform the task.
