Abstract(s)
The present text aims to analyze the political thought of Francisco Salgado Zenha and its importance in the struggle for democratization of Portugal before and after the 25th April 1974 and is born from the recognition of two paradoxes: the first paradox is that although Francisco Salgado Zenha is an inevitable name in Portuguese History in the second half of the 20th century for its action in the fight for liberty, during the Estado Novo and in consolidating the democratic regime that appeared after 1974’s Portuguese Revolution; but that, notwithstanding its importance, his name is somehow lost in the memories of History; the second paradoxical contradiction in the fact that, in the early years of our democracy, Mário Soares, his friend, companion and longtime accomplice have classified as the "moral conscience of the Socialist Party", but that would be the subject of disciplinary proceedings by the party that both helped to found, being this moment the beginning of his progressive rupture that would culminate in his candidacy for the Presidency of the Republic precisely against Mario Soares. Seeks to inform not only the personal, professional and political career of Salgado Zenha, but above all bring to our days his legacy, with special relevance to ethics that, for him, should always be present in politics, patent in the uncompromising defense of principles, values and ideals that have guiden his life, at a time when politics seems more guided by the defense of private interests than by principles, values and ideals.
