Abstract(s)
This paper consists of two parts. The first part results from my research work, which characterized epidemiologically asthma and rhinitis in the elderly, while the second part refers to my internship report on a community pharmacy. Part I: Asthma and allergic rhinitis, as well as other respiratory diseases, are common chronic diseases whose prevalence, incidence, severity and morbidity have increased in recent years and vary considerably around the world, both between countries and the different regions of the same country. It is estimated that these diseases affect around 300 million people worldwide. The objective of this study is to analyze and compare the prevalence, clinical characteristics and demographic profiles of sensitization as well as the risk factors of asthma and rhinitis among the elderly and young adults. The study population consists of two groups of volunteers from Beira Interior: one group is of young adults (born between January 1976 and December 1993) and the other is of elderly (born before 1945). The study sample included 457 volunteers. Of those 369 were elderly (214 of which were female with an average age of 73) and 178 were young adults (96 of which were female with an average age of 28). All patients answered a standardized questionnaire. Later, skin tests for allergies were performed to assess the concentration of total IgE and Phadiatop. The prevalence of asthma in the elderly (26.6%) is higher than in young adults (18.5%), and this is higher in women in both groups. The prevalence of allergic asthma in young adults (12%) was higher than in the elderly (8.4%), with men having a higher prevalence in both groups. The prevalence of rhinitis and RA was higher in young adults (64 and 39.6%) than in the elderly (56.9% and 20.9). Rhinitis was higher in women in both groups, whereas RA was higher in older men and younger women. With respect to the total IgE, no relation was found between total IgE concentration and the age of the subjects, although it was observed that the total IgE concentration decreases with age and it is higher in atopic patients than in non-atopic. Significant differences were observed in the patterns of sensitization between the two groups with young adults being more sensitized to all aeroallergens tested. Part II: The internship report refers everything that was done by me during my internship at Farmácia Parente. It describes the equipment, facilities, staff, some rules, regulations and laws of pharmacy practice as well as the operating process of the pharmacy, how a pharmacist should act and everything else surrounding it.
