Abstract(s)
The dissertation presented here seeks to address the issue of gender, African masculinities andemotions, being a case study in Guinea-Bissau. The research seeks to contributetounderstanding how middle-aged men from three different ethnic groups built theirmasculinities, reflected on gender and dealt with their emotions. I hope that thereisadissonance between the perceptions and experiences of these men and the more recent soberdebates as new masculinities, but we believe that there is a strong need to understandtheirviews and understand the knowledge they cause and transmit in their local communities. Thisdissertation also seeks to give voice to the existing literature in Africa and Guinea-Bissauthatinvestigate these themes. Our results allow us to observe that, despite the great diversity found, men share views strongly marked by their experiences of violence and represent a stronglypatriarchal world. In this process, the new ways of being a man are interpreted as destabilizingand threatening the learned matchundadi.
