Abstract(s)
Aim: This study aims to describe and evaluate the physical activity habits, leisure and food in a population of 12 to 18 years. Methodology: The sample consisted of 179 pupils, 103 male and 76 female, of 3rd cycle and Secondary Education from Externato Captitão Santiago de Carvalho de Alpedrinha. Two types of instruments were used in the study: a questionnaire to check the lifestyle, adapted from (Matos et al. 2000) and a record of anthropometric measurements (weight and height). In the data processing we used the descriptive analysis of variables, using the measures of dispersion using the SPSS statistical program, version 20. Results: Although there aren’t significant differences between the IMC and the sex, the percentage values of girls are lower than the guys at normal weight (61.8% and 66%), low weight (21.1% and 22.3%) and obesity (1.3% and 1.9%).Concerning to the overweight level, girls surpass boys (15.8% and 9.7%).The study also shows that there is a high percentage of students (41.7% and 36.7%) who are low weighted, between 12 and 13 years old. We can also see that the boys (17.88%) spend more time (four hours or more) doing physical exercise than girls do (1.12%). As to the frequency (four to seven days per week) the values are higher in boys (16.76%), in girls (4.47%). Concerning to leisure activities, students (62%), daily spend "between half an hour to three hours" watching TV. 43% of the respondants mentioned that they spend one to six hours playing computer/ Playstation. Concerning to food habits, there were some interesting results to point out: the food with the highest daily consumption was the bread (82.7%), followed by the fruit (76.5%). The food which is more consumed once a week is the French fries (77.1%). The food that is rarely or never consumed is skim milk. Conclusion: By analysing the study results, we can conclude that it is extremely important to implement programmes of food education and of physical activity promotion targeted at teenagers as a way of preventing diseases and promoting a healthy lifestyle.
