Abstract(s)
Emotional regulation is a variable that has been given greater scientific depth in recent years. Taking into consideration the impact on people's efforts and performance at all stages of the emotional regulation process, it becomes pertinent to analyze beliefs about the controllability and usefulness of emotions. The present study explores the impact of beliefs about emotions on emotional regulation, particularly on emotional regulation difficulties. The sample consisted of 125 adolescents, aged between 12 and 15 years (Mean = 13.35, SD = 0.99). Data collection was carried out through contact with public schools (groups of schools) and private entities (tutoring centers), using a Sociodemographic Questionnaire, the Difficulties in Emotional Regulation Scale short form and the Beliefs about Emotions Questionnaire. In general terms, the results of this investigation suggest the effect of beliefs about emotions on emotional regulation, specifically on emotional regulation difficulties. In fact, the controllability (positive and negative) and usefulness (positive and negative) of beliefs about emotions have been shown to play a relevant role in the way adolescents regulate their emotions. Finally, the main limitations and possible contributions of this research are presented.
