Abstract(s)
The present dissertation for the master’s degree in pharmaceutical sciences is divided into two main chapters, based on the two aspects of the subject “Internship”: Research Project and Community Pharmacy. The first chapter addresses the research developed to evaluate the practice of self-medication by the health professionals of the Local Health Unit of Guarda – Sousa Martins Hospital. Self-medication is an increasingly common practice these days, held by the general population. Health professionals stand out in relation to the general population, since they have knowledge and easy access to medicines, promoting the use of self-medication. The characteristics of their work also contribute to self-medication. This study was conducted using anonymous and confidential questionnaires distributed among health professionals of this hospital. Some of the issues addressed in this paper include the reasons to practice or not self-medication, most used drugs in this practice and also the most common symptoms experienced by the different professionals when practicing self-medication. Of the 264 health professionals that were surveyed, most of them practice self-medication (74.62%), the majority were male (85.7%), aged between 31 and 40 years (83.1%). There is a higher prevalence of self-medication among the physicians (85.0%), master's degree holders (87.9%) and people with professional experience between 6 and 10 years (92.9%). The most consumed drugs were analgesics (20.7%) and the most reported symptom was “headache” (17.1%). It is also noted that 84.77% of self-medication practitioners acquire non-prescription drugs and the majority (66.7%) buys drugs for own use at pharmacies (71.94%). Most health professionals who participated in this study did not consider self-medication to be correct although they practiced it (58.7%). The second chapter refers to the internship in community pharmacy, in Farmácia da Sé in Guarda, from January 26th to June 13 of 2016 in a total of 800 hours. During this internship I had the opportunity to deal with different realities and realize, in a practical context, the importance and functions of the community pharmacist. Thus, this chapter describes the activities, the skills and knowledge acquired during the internship.
