Abstract(s)
A adolescência é um período de transição que acarreta muitas mudanças (e.g.
físicas, sociais e emocionais), sendo uma etapa do ciclo vital fundamental para a
formação da identidade. Por conseguinte, uma auto-estima saudável constitui um bom
preditor de uma adequada adaptação a estas transições.
Participaram no estudo 360 adolescentes com idades compreendidas entre os
12 e os 17 anos do interior do país. A auto-estima dos participantes foi avaliada
utilizando a Escala de Auto-Apreciação Pessoal ou Auto-Estima (α=0,93). Os
objectivos foram: a) comparar os valores de auto-estima nos três grupos etários
formados, correspondentes a diferentes fases da adolescência (adolescência inicial,
adolescência intermédia e adolescência final); b) averiguar a existência de diferenças ao
nível da auto-estima na adolescência mediante o género, o contexto social, a existência
de reprovações, o número de reprovações, a intenção futura de tirar um curso superior, a
prática desportiva, o desporto praticado, o tipo de prática e as horas semanais praticadas.
Os adolescentes revelaram uma auto-estima tendencialmente inferior ao valor
mediano. Foram encontradas diferenças estatísticas foram significativas para todas as
variáveis com excepção da intenção futura de tirar um curso superior. Os adolescentes
que apresentaram uma auto-estima mais elevada foram os mais velhos, os do género
masculino, do contexto urbano, os que frequentavam o 11º ano, os que reprovaram mais
vezes, revelaram intenção futura de tirar um curso e praticavam desporto,
particularmente os que praticavam futsal, mais horas e/ou em competição.

The objectives were: a) compare the values of self-esteem in the three formed groups with different ages, corresponding to different stages of adolescence (early adolescence, middle adolescence and final adolescence), b) verifying the existence of differences in self-esteem of adolescents by gender, social context, existence of failures, number of failures, future intention of taking a degree course, sport practice, sport practiced, type of practice and the hours practiced for week. The adolescents showed a self-esteem that tends to be lower than the median value. Statistical differences were significant for all variables except the future intention of taking a degree course. Adolescents with higher self-esteem were older, male, from the urban context, attended the 11th grade, failed more often, revealed future intention of take a degree course and practiced sport, particularly those who practiced football of five players, more hours for week and/or practiced sports in competition.
