Título: Mobile platform solution for patient ulcer monitorization with capacity for integration into an electronic health record

Resumo: Nowadays, mobile devices are each time more significant and have growing impact either in developed, emerging or underdeveloped countries. Quick access to information presents a great importance, as it accelerates work processes, resulting in better time utilization. Additionally, it may increase the quality of care. Mobile applications are increasingly used to support nursing work. Specifically, mobile information and communication technology (MICT) has potential to support treatment initiatives for patients with skin ulceration or with a high risk for its development. This dissertation proposes a mobile ulcer monitoring system, called mULCER, which control patient’s ulcer status during all stages of treatment. Additionally, it integrates with an Electronic Health Record (EHR) system. mULCER synchronizes ulcer data with the EHR system and provides everywhere at anytime support for nurses on evidence-based advice for prevention, classification, and monitoring different phases of ulcer healing or prevention. It also increases security and extensiveness of nursing record. The solution can be operated in a stand-alone mode or embedded into an EHR system. It serves as a tool to integrate nursing care among hospital departments and institutions on an enterprise wide effort to increase level of health care integration at the point of service. The advantages and disadvantages of mobile devices were considered for this purpose. The dissertation describes the concepts and includes a complete prototype to represent the proposed contribution. mULCER was experimented in different mobile devices ( LG Optimus one P500, Samsung Galaxy Tab, HTC Magic, Samsung Galaxy S and Samsung Galaxy i5700 ), taking the user experience into different screens sizes and processing characteristics. All the components are finalized and only evaluation by nurses, focusing mainly on application and improvement to their daily work is missing.
