Abstract(s)
This study aims to identify and analyse the success factors of small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) for economic development and the impact of entrepreneurship on those factors. To fulfil this objective, the case study method was adopted, focusing on seven SMEs (cases) belonging to the construction sector. These SMEs were selected according to the Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistical Purposes II, one from each region: North, Central, Lisbon Metropolitan Area, Alentejo, Algarve, Azores and Madeira. For data-collection, interviews and documentary analysis were used. Based on the empirical evidence obtained, the SMEs studied are success-oriented and entrepreneurial, but some of them need adjustments to the success factors analysed in order to achieve substantial economic growth. Also based on the empirical evidence, two fundamental success factors are found to contribute to the success of the SMEs (cases) studied here: business motivation (opportunity versus need) and entrepreneurial human resources (related to education, experience and contact networks). In those factors its crucial to have strategic planning that will give SME managers a tool ,providing them with access to various types of information, essential for decision-making process. With a formal and structured strategic plan, SMEs can identify the external threats in their competitive environment, improve understanding of competitors’ strategies and increase collaborator productivity, among other aspects. In addition, the non-existence of resistance to change, improved capacity to prevent problems, increased sales, profits and productivity imply effective and sustained long-term growth in SMEs. Some implications for practice in the SME context are also presented.
