Davydovych, Vitaliy; Filgueiras, Ernesto Vilar; Marto, AnabelaVideogames have historically exerted profound influence on human kind, and with advancements in technology, the study of their characteristics has become increasingly intricate. With the rise of virtual reality, personalization and the feeling of presence have gained unprecedented attention. However, less interactive virtual environments, such as Visual Novels, are often overlooked, with the role of personalization and the sense of presence in this medium being even more unknown. By integrating moral elements to decision-making and creating both personalized and non-personalized narrative environments, this study identifies mild connections between players’ choice type that can go hand in hand with increased feeling of presence and personalization. A study was conducted in which two groups of participants played a decision-making game, one group in which personal information was collected and integrated into the narrative (personalization), and another group with no information collected and with a predefined narrative. Results have shown that participants subject to a personalized environment may be more prone to conservative choices, however, it is unknown whether this inclination is a result of an increased feeling of presence. Additionally, age, genre familiarity, and character attraction are other factors that potentially influence decision-making.
