  • Cognitive Decline Complaints Scale (CDCS)

    Subjective Cognitive Complaints (SCC), which result from the self-perception of Subjective Cognitive Decline (SCD), are frequently reported by older adult people. The Cognitive Decline Complaints Scale (CDCS) assesses subjective complaints of cognitive decline in several cognitive domains - attention and concentration, memory, language, executive functions, temporal and spatial orientation and visuospatial function - through three levels of severity. This study aims to psychometrically validate this instrument considering the Classical Test Theory, and to establish preliminary normative data of the CDCS for the elderly Portuguese population. The communitybased sample consisted of 199 cognitively healthy Portuguese adults and older adults, stratified according to several sociodemographic variables with a distribution similar to that observed in the Portuguese population. All participants responded, in addition to the CDCS, to an extensive neuropsychological assessment protocol. The psychometric characteristics of the CDCS were generally adequate for this community sample. As for the sociodemographic variables analyzed, only the geographic region had differences in the CDCS scores, which can be explained by differences observed in the levels of depressive symptoms between the mainland and the island of Portugal (Açores). There were no significant correlations or differences between the CDCS scores and age and educational level and, therefore normative data were explored considering the total sample. The CDCS is a scale that allows the detailed assessment of subjective cognitive complaints and the determination of whether or not such complaints are considered normative, which will facilitate an empirically based understanding of this dimension of psychological functioning and also provide indications as to the need for a more extensive neuropsychological assessment.

  • Memória de Trabalho e Sintomatologia Depressiva

    A presente dissertação integra o projeto “Sintomatologia Psicopatológica e memória de trabalho”, conduzido em Portugal, cujo objetivo geral é avaliar como sintomas psicopatológicos como ansiedade e a depressão se relacionam com alterações na memória de trabalho. Esta será apresentada em formato de artigo científico escrito em português. O objetivo específico deste estudo é avaliar se os níveis de sintomatologia depressiva têm impacto no desempenho do subcomponente buffer episódico da memória de trabalho. Este estudo pode ser classificado como experimental/quasiexperimental, uma vez que permite a determinação de um objeto de estudo, a seleção de variáveis capazes de influenciá-lo, a definição de formas de controle e de observação dos efeitos que cada variável produz no objeto de estudo. Para a recolha dos dados foram utilizadas medidas como o Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI) e o questionário sociodemográfico. Com um total de 111 participantes, as idades dos mesmos situam-se entre os 18 e os 52 anos, sendo que a média de idades é 23.4. Mais de metade dos participantes são do género feminino (71.2%) e 28.8% são do género masculino. Para além do artigo científico, a presente dissertação inclui, ainda, um enquadramento teórico mais alargado, no qual são explorados de forma mais detalhada todos os conceitos relativos à memória de trabalho, à sintomatologia depressiva e à relação existente entre estas duas concetualizações, de forma a aprofundar e consolidar os fundamentos teóricos presentes no artigo.
