- Brand awareness: a proposal for the Intermunicipal Community of Beiras and Serra da EstrelaPublication . Noronha, Mateus; Gonçalves, GiselaNotoriety is one of the first criteria that strategies for an organization's institutional reputation need to meet in order to achieve a positive image with the public and, consequently, revert this capital to the fulfillment of its organizational objectives. The aim of this article is to present a proposal for a specific communication strategy to reverse the low level of notoriety of the Comunidade Intermunicipal das Beiras e Serra da Estrela (CIMBSE), based on the results of a content analysis carried out based on online news from media based in the 15 municipalities that make up the territory in question. The results indicate that the activities of the “Cultural Heritage” axis of action are, among the others, the most likely to make the messages reach the largest number of stakeholders with the possibility of producing brand memory in these audiences in line with favorable associations – fundamental factor for notoriety to be associated with a positive institutional image.
- Intelligent micro-cogeneration systems for residential grids: a sustainable solution for efficient energy managementPublication . Cardoso, Daniel; Nunes, Daniel Figueira; Faria, João; Fael, Paulo; Gaspar, Pedro DinisThis paper presents an optimization approach for Micro-cogeneration systems with internal combustion engines integrated into residential grids, addressing power demand failures caused by intermittent renewable energy sources. The proposed method leverages machine learning techniques, control strategies, and grid data to improve system flexibility and efficiency in meeting electricity and domestic hot water demands. Historical residential grid data were analysed to develop a machine learning-based demand prediction model for electricity and hot water. Thermal energy storage was integrated into the Micro-cogeneration system to enhance flexibility. An optimization model was created, considering efficiency, emissions, and cost while adapting to real-time demand changes. A control strategy was designed for the flexible operation of the Micro-cogeneration system, addressing excess thermal energy storage and resource allocation. The proposed solution’s effectiveness was validated through simulations, with results demonstrating the Micro-cogeneration system’s ability to efficiently address high electricity and hot water demand periods while mitigating power demand failures from renewable energy sources. The research presents a novel approach with the potential to significantly improve grid resilience, energy efficiency, and renewable energy integration in residential grids, contributing to more sustainable and reliable energy systems.
- Home Birth in Portugal - A Comprehensive Analysis Based on Official Statistical DataPublication . Pintassilgo, Sónia; Santos, Mário JDS; Trindade, Inês; Neves, Dulce M.To date, there are no comprehensive analyses of the official data on home births in Portugal that consider other determinants beyond place of birth, such as the conditions in which births occur or the mothers’ social profiles. The aims of this article were: (1) to describe the characteristics of childbirth in Portugal according to the place of birth, and (2) to analyse the association between home birth assistance and perinatal, neonatal, and infant mortality rates. We performed a descriptive, correlational analysis of the official datasets of live births in Portugal (census-based) produced by the National Institute of Statistics. In 2020, home births had more similarities with hospital births than to births occurring in any “other place”. Furthermore, considering the 1995–2020 timeframe, home births with specialised assistance were negatively correlated with perinatal, neonatal, and infant mortality, and home births with non-specialised professional assistance or those that were unassisted showed a positive correlation with these mortality rates. Home births are heterogenous, and merely referencing the place of birth does not provide enough information. Although it recommended further investigation, this analysis pointed to the need to assure a specific, systematic evaluation of the quality of care in home births that allows for the consistent assessment and improvement of its safety.
- An Eco-Energetic Performance Comparison of Dehumidification Systems in High-Moisture Indoor EnvironmentsPublication . Santos, Alexandre Fernandes; Gaspar, Pedro Dinis; Souza, Heraldo; Caldeira, João M. L. P.; Soares, Vasco N. G. J.This study discusses the choice of dehumidification systems for high-moisture indoor environments, such as indoor swimming pools, supported by an eco-energetic performance comparison. Initially, the causes of the high relative humidity and condensation in these spaces are reported, as well as the available dehumidification technologies. Two different solutions are described: desiccant wheel dehumidification and re-cooling. The energy demand required by a refrigeration system is lower than the desiccant wheel; however, the former system requires less maintenance and does not require refrigerant fluid. An eco-energetic comparison is performed between the two systems in two countries with different energy matrices (Brazil and USA). In Brazil, the desiccant wheel is the best choice for the past 10 years, with a predicted 351,520 kgCO2 of CO2 emissions, which is 38% lower than the refrigeration system. In the USA, the best option is the refrigeration system (1,463,350 kgCO2), a 12% more efficient option than desiccant wheels. This model can be considered for energy and CO2 emissions assessment, predicting which system has better energy efficiency and lower environmental impact, depending on the refrigerant type, location and environmental conditions.

- Thermal Management of Short-Range Distribution of Perishable Food Products Using Phase Change Materials in Packaging: Real-Time Field Data AcquisitionPublication . Aguiar, Martim; Gaspar, Pedro Dinis; Silva, Pedro Dinho daMaintaining a stable temperature is critical in ensuring the longevity of perishable foods, and frequent fluctuations due to short-range distribution conditions can negatively affect this stability. To mitigate these variations, an innovative modular packaging system utilizing phase change materials (PCMs) was employed in the transport and storage of horticultural products. This study’s real-time thermal condition data, collected using a wireless data acquisition system inserted in the packaging, demonstrated the efficacy of PCM in increasing temperature stability within the crates of horticultural products. The field tests conducted over 8 h showed that PCM-equipped packaging boxes exhibited a temperature variation of less than 1 °C, compared to non-PCM boxes, which saw variations up to 3 °C. This marked reduction in temperature fluctuation signifies the potential of PCM in improving thermal and logistics management in food conservation, thus reducing food waste. However, it is essential to implement a system for PCM alveoli reuse to avoid adverse environmental impacts. Future research should focus on the PCM alveoli autonomy and quantity requirements for specific conditions, and integrate sensors to monitor transport dynamics to enhance the understanding of temperature stability in perishable food transportation.
- Plural Existences: Feminists’ Epistemologies and the History of ArchitecturePublication . Pedrosa, Patrícia Santos; Antunes, Lia GilWhen we study 20th-century History of Portuguese Architecture we notice the absence of women architects, a reality replicated in the global history of the discipline. This work dialogues with some genealogical lines that can be useful in sketching a different way of making History, namely the History of Women Architects. We propose a situated methodology that expands sources, voices and narratives, drawing on contributions from feminist historiography in general, including their materialization in Art and Geography. The goal of this proposal is to contextually frame a feminist methodology for the History of Architecture in Portugal that considers plural existences and welcomes multiple ways of embodying and making architecture.
