- From technical specialist to government authorityPublication . Toniolo, Bianca; Sampaio, HugoIn this chapter, we assessed the discourse of the Portuguese Civil Protection spokesperson, Patrícia Gaspar, during events of risk and crisis triggered by natural disasters of meteorological phenomena. We used the qualitative method of discourse analysis to verify whether the voice of the technical expert or that of the political authority prevails in her communication. We also discussed verbal and nonverbal aspects of the spokesperson's communicative performance and to what extent the interventions denote preparation with media training strategies and techniques, with the purpose of obtaining the best results with risk and crisis communication. The study concluded that the voice as a government authority predominated in the interviews given to the media by the spokesperson for Civil Protection during the fires and floods and that the verbal aspects of the preparation of her communication stood out compared to the nonverbal ones.
