- On the influence of the pole and teeth shapes on the performance of linear switched reluctance actuatorPublication . Espírito Santo, António; Calado, M. do Rosário; Cabrita, CarlosThe purpose of this paper is the evaluation of the influence of pole and teeth shapes on the behaviour of a linear switched reluctance actuator (LSRA). The study was carried out through the application of a finite-element static analysis and the application of a new method for dynamic analysis. Those studies are thereafter evaluated with experimentations.
- Using finite element method based software to teach electrical machines-The linear switched reluctance actuatorPublication . Calado, M. Do Rosário; Espírito Santo, António; Salvado, José A.; Cabrita, Carlos; Mariano, S.In this paper, the authors intend to propose a method to teach Electrical Machines in Electrical Engineering courses. The way that both in textbooks and classrooms treat this subject seems to limit students' understanding. The competences on electrical machines design and analysis are improved by a practical approach based on simulation and numerical analysis using Finite Element Method Software. As a complement to the previous teaching method, the students use an experimental test bench to verify the numerical results. A particular topic, concerning the study of the Linear Switched Reluctance Actuators, is here presented. Therefore, we propose a guideline for use in the classroom.
- Sliding Mode Position Controller for a Linear Switched Reluctance ActuatorPublication . Espírito Santo, António; Calado, M. do Rosário; Cabrita, CarlosMore than never, the automation of industrial processes has high technical requirements. Today, most of the fabrication processes must operate with an efficient and precise control of different parameters like: velocity, position and torque. Simultaneously, the controller must be immune enough to the outside world perturbations typically found in industry. At the same time, the kind of movement required by today processes is beyond the simple rotational configuration. Linear actuators are making their appearance in the industry, being already a reality and a truly available option that designers and engineers can consider. The traditional conversion method used to transform rotational motion into linear displacement is no more acceptable. In the old days, linear displacement was obtained from a rotational motor shaft, after mechanical conversion by a specific mechanism containing pulleys, worm gears and belts. The presence of these components diminishes the robustness and reliability of the industrial processes. [...]
