- Absorptive capacity and cooperation evidence in innovation from public policies for innovationPublication . Moura, Dulcineia Catarina; Madeira, Maria Jose; Duarte, Filipe A. P.; Carvalho, João; Kahilana, OrlandoPurpose The purpose of this paper is to better understand whether firm cooperation and absorptive capacity foster success in seeking public financial support for innovation activities and, by doing so, how they contribute to innovation output. Design/methodology/approach The authors therefore extend the existing literature focusing on the effects of cooperation and absorptive capacity on specific public financial support for innovation activities in Portuguese firms from local or regional government, central administration and the European Union by using available data from the Community Innovation Survey CIS 2010 and the application of logistic regression models. The empirical analysis enabled a better understanding of the positive relationship of the variables that determine the form of public financial support in the integration of incentives within firms to stimulate innovation. Findings Therefore, as the level of absorptive capacity in Portuguese firms increases, so does the demand for benefits from public financial support to stimulate innovation from the European Union also increases. The same analysis, now considering the determinant cooperation, notes the positive effects of institutional sources of information and cooperation, in the propensity for seeking public financial incentives from the Central Administration and the European Union. As for internal information and cooperation sources, they are positively related to the integration of incentive measures from the local or Regional Administration and Central Administration. Originality/value The paper presents results that allow us to propose some suggestions that both the firms and those responsible for the implementation of public policies can undertake to increment innovation performance.
- Managing the Technology for Selectively Collecting Solid Waste in the Western Amazon Sub RegionPublication . Vieira, Norma Maria Coelho; Silva, Marcelo José Peres Gomes da; Filho, Flávio De São Pedro; Madeira, Maria Jose; Almeida, Fabricio Moraes deThis study's main objective is to study the complexity of technological management of the collection of solid waste, through the prism of reverse logistics; and to propose certain specific objectives: (1) to describe the form of concentration of solid waste in the group studied; (2) to analyze the impact of the volume of solid waste; and (3) to propose intervention measures for solid waste management. It asks what technology management model should guide the selective collection of solid waste in the Amazon. Based on the theory of convergence, it studies the strategy of competitive advantage in understanding the organizational system in the environment in which it operates; on this theory, Nobre (2011) addresses knowledge as a source that transmits competitive edge in order to contribute to a company's organizational system. The research is qualitative and descriptive; it applies the Case Study method, and related procedures. As a study, it confirms that the investigated collector cooperatives are vulnerable, which influences the conclusions of this study. It finds that the collectors employed by these organizations are the significant environmental agents in the process of reusing and recycling materials and thus play a key role in reverse logistics because they can return the waste to the production chain adding value and promoting shared management,. The results also point to the absence of a system to promote environmental education, despite the potential viability of the materials and regardless of the possible economic and social improvements to the Amazonians and their families. The system proposed here involves the selective collection of solid waste by intelligent machines, applying reverse logistics. This study could benefit business people, the government and other stakeholders in public policy and sustainability in fragile environments such as the Brazilian Amazon.
- Credit Guarantee and the Impact in Financial Structure of the Portuguese SMEsPublication . Duarte, Filipe A. P.; Rodrigues, Luís Fernandes; Madeira, Maria JoseThe aim of this work is to show the relevance of guarantees provided by the Mutual Credit Guarantee System (MCGS - the Portuguese Society of Credit Guarantee SPGM) as an instrument used in the financing of SMEs, especially in restructuring long-term debt (LTD) and bank loans. The study provides empirical evidence and puts forward an explanatory model of the influence of the mutual credit guarantees on the financing of SMEs. The results obtained show that long-term debt (LTD) financing is positively influenced by the guarantees provided by the MCGS to SMEs as it allows greater debt capacity, especially in the medium and long term, for firms that usually cannot obtain this type of financing. The results also suggest that this type of guarantees creates an environment of confidence among all stakeholders involved.
- Cooperation for Innovation in the European Union: Outlook and Evidences Using CIS for 15 European CountriesPublication . Carvalho, Luísa; Madeira, Maria Jose; Carvalho, João; Moura, Dulcineia Catarina; Duarte, Filipe P.Cooperation for innovation is understood as an essential element in the innovation process of European firms. The aim is to compare how the different sources of information (external and internal) and cooperation for innovation are used in manufacturing and services in Europe using Community Innovation Survey (CIS) data for 15 European countries. The empirical study uses a sample of firms included in the CIS (2008), which covers 15 European countries and applies multivarious data analysis techniques to extract results. The results of this research suggest that firms use simultaneously different sources of information for cooperation, revealing different patterns of cooperation according to the activity sector in Europe. This paper brings some important insights about cooperation for innovation and suggests some patterns in Europe useful to design public policies, due de similar behavior of some countries grouped according with geography, development status or other economic features. Thus, this article seeks to frame the subject based on a literature review that raises a set of study hypotheses and presents an empirical study applied to cooperation for innovation in Europe using the CIS for 15 European countries.
- The epistemological character of isomorphism in the generation of innovationPublication . Rocha, Sued Santos Souza; Filho, Flávio De São Pedro; Madeira, Maria José Aguilar; Lukman, Inon BeydhaThis paper presents as its main objective an analysis of the epistemological nature of isomorphism in the generation of innovation in organisations. The present research observed current contents such as analyses of design thinking and isomorphism, with their intra-organisational interactions. It concludes that isomorphism is a frequent practice of managers in organisations who seek to copy structures or actions in order to obtain greater visibility and competitiveness in a specific organisational field. However, innovation is also a prominent way of distinguishing a product for the sake of market competitiveness; as a theoretical contribution it is an excellent form of organisational change, in that it exposes selectively the conceptual proposals of several contributors, focusing on creative modelling for new solutions through design and planning. This study includes diagrams, charts and other elements to meet predictable expectations. They are intended to benefit researchers and other scholars of innovation, in light of the relevance and coverage of this theme.
- Circular and Collaborative Economies as a Propulsion of Environmental Sustainability in the New Fashion Business ModelsPublication . Fernandes, Solange; Lucas, José; Madeira, Maria Jose; Cruchinho, Alexandra; Honório, Isabela DiasThe objective of this work is to explore convergence and divergence between business models of circular and collaborative economies in fashion industry and the benefits to sustainable development. The methodological approach is exploratory through bibliographic review and case study of two business models. The first, Rent the Runway, makes use of the Services and Products System (PSS), being a circular model using eco-efficient services with the potential to replicate and to compete with the ‘fast-fashion’ industry. The case study was done using data from Rent the Runway website. The second, Wardrobe, a P2P platform whose study was conducted with personal information with the company co-founder Germanno Teles. Wardrobe business models have a high potential for scalability, as they can be replicated anywhere, have no physical inventory, as users own their clothes. Thus, circular economy is considered to be holistic and adaptive, representing an evolution of the linear economy through the perception and need of a new sustainable strategy in response to the environmental degradation caused by the traditional linear economy. Collaborative economy can be considered an environmentally sustainable socio-economic system, built through the use of digital networks to connect and share goods and products, as well as human, financial and physical capital.

- Antecedents of entrepreneurial and intrapreneurial intentions: evidence from BrazilPublication . Marchiori, Danilo Magno; Madeira, Maria Jose; Dinis, AnabelaThe general objective of the present study is to identify the antecedents of the entrepreneurial and intrapreneurial intentions of 266 potential entrepreneurs, represented by students of the degree courses in Business Administration and Accounting Sciences in brazilians higher education institutions. For this purpose, as specific objectives we sought to identify whether entrepreneurial and intrapreneurial behavior are seen as different career options by students, as well as understanding the degree of relative importance for students of the attributes of property, income expectation, extra work tolerance, desire for autonomy and risk of income variation. For the data analysis, we specified structural equation models, with a confirmatory factorial analysis, as well as using the conjoint analysis approach of the attributes selected for the study. The results indicate that the constructive entrepreneurial intentions and intrapreneurial intentions are perceived as different career options by the students. The results also indicate that the most valued attribute by the respondents to define professional choice is income expectation and the least valued is the tolerance to the accomplishment of additional effort. Finally, the results point out that the income expectation variable is antecedent of the entrepreneurial intentions, and no other significant relationships were detected.
