- Filmes (Ir)refletidosPublication .
- Pacing behaviour of players in team sports: Influence of match status manipulation and task duration knowledgePublication . Ferraz, Ricardo; Gonçalves, Bruno; Coutinho, Diogo; Marinho, Daniel; Sampaio, Jaime; Marques, MCThe study aimed to identify the influence of prior knowledge of exercise duration associated with initial information about momentary match status (losing or winning) on the pacing behaviour displayed during soccer game-based activities. Twenty semi-professional male players participated in four game scenarios divided in two sessions. In the first game scenario, players were not informed about the time duration or initial match status. In the second, players were only informed they would be required to play a small-sided game for 12 minutes. In the third, players were told they would play a small-sided game for 12 minutes and that one of the teams was winning 2 to 0. Finally, in the fourth game scenario, players were instructed they would play a small-sided game for 12 minutes and the score lines used at the start of the previous game scenario were reversed. The results showed a tendency for the unknown task duration to elicit greater physical responses in all studied variables, compared with knowing the task duration. Knowing the task duration and starting the game winning or losing did not affect the players' activity profile between the two conditions. Thus, during small-sided soccer games, knowledge (or not) about the exercise duration alters the pacing behaviour of the players. Moreover, short and undisclosed-length exercise durations resulted in the adoption of more aggressive pacing strategies, characterised by higher initial exercise intensities. Furthermore, previous information on match status does not seem to interfere with pacing patterns if the players are aware of the exercise duration. Coaches may use knowledge of exercise duration to manipulate the small-sided games' demands.
- Permeable pavements – green infrastructures as a flood mitigation measurePublication . Afonso, Márcia Isabel Lopes; Almeida, Marisa S. Dinis; Fael, Cristina Maria SenaPermeable asphalt pavements have been one of the solutions used to increase the permeability of road pavements given the growing urbanization and climate change. The high porosity and permeability of surface layers with PA (porous asphalt) mixtures allows the water infiltration and, consequently, reduces superficial runoff and contributes to the recharge of underground aquifers. However, the infiltration capacity may be impaired by clogged pores with sediments. The double layer porous asphalt (DLPA) was developed to mitigate this effect. This is a key issue in the pavements’ service life. Information on the clogging processes in these layers is not yet well characterized. The study was carried out using a rainfall simulator in order to generate design storm events with a known intensity and duration. The experimental methodology adopted took into account different phases of evaluation of the infiltration capacity with two clogging cycles (500 and 1000 g m-2). The DLPA infiltration capacity was evaluated in the different phases after different precipitation events (100, 200 and 300 mm h-1). The results showed that, in general, the double layer porous asphalt has the capacity to drain the water, even after clogging and with lower voids content. The infiltration capacity was partially restored when subjected to simple maintenance.

- “Less is more”: Simplifying point clouds to improve grasping performancePublication . Lopes, Vasco; Alexandre, Luís; Fernandes, MiguelObject grasping is a task that humans do without major concerns. This results from self learning and by observing of other skilled humans doing such task with previous information. However, grasping novel objects in unknown positions for a robot is a complex task which encounters many problems, such as sub-optimal performance rates and the time consumption. In this paper we present a method that complements the state-of-the-art grasping algorithms with two segmentation steps, the first one which removes the largest planar surface in the point cloud of the world before the grasp detector receives them and the second one that complements this segmentation with another segmentation that calculates where the object is located and segments the point cloud by executing a crop around the object. The proposed method significantly improves the grasping success rate (100% improvement over the baseline approach) and simultaneously is able to reduce the time consumption by 23%.
- p53 as the Focus of Gene Therapy: Past, Present and FuturePublication . Valente, Joana; Queiroz, João; Sousa, FaniSeveral gene deviations can be responsible for triggering oncogenic processes. However, mutations in tumour suppressor genes are usually more associated to malignant diseases, with p53 being one of the most affected and studied element. p53 is implicated in a number of known cellular functions, including DNA damage repair, cell cycle arrest in G1/S and G2/M and apoptosis, being an interesting target for cancer treatment.
- iSensA - A System for Collecting and Integrating Sensor DataPublication . Caldeira, João; Soares, Vasco N. G. J.; Gaspar, Pedro Dinis; Rodrigues, Joel P. C.; Fontes, Ricardo; Silva, José Luís LopesThe idea of monitoring several types of parameters in various environments has been motivating significant research works in Internet of Things (IoT). This paper presents the design and construction of iSensA, a system for integrating and collecting information from sensors. The solution implements a multi-sensor monitoring system and then expands the monitoring concept to an IoT solution, by employing multi-network access, Web services, database and web and mobile applications for user interaction. iSensA system is highly configurable, enabling several monitoring solutions with different types of sensors. Experiments have been performed on real application scenarios to validate and evaluate our proposition.

- Technological progress and other factors behind the adoption of electric vehicles: Empirical evidence for EU countriesPublication . Neves, Sónia Almeida; Marques, António Cardoso; Fuinhas, José AlbertoThis paper aims to analyse the factors supporting the transition to new forms of mobility, namely Electric Vehicles (EV). For a deep understanding of these effects, we analysed EV, by dividing them into individual Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV), which are 100% electric, and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV). The factors examined include: policy, social, economic, environmental, and technical. This paper uses data from 2010 to 2016 for a panel of the 24 EU countries. A Panel-Corrected Standard Errors (PCSE) estimator is used. When comparing the results of analysing BEV and PHEV individually, and all EV together, they prove to be quite different. This finding indicates that policies should be tailored to each individual technology, rather than a single one for all EV. The proxy used for technological progress is the increased use of both BEV and PHEV. The evidence is also provided that charging stations are drivers of electric mobility.
