Abstract(s)
The progressive ageing of people with intellectual disabilities (ID) involves complex issues related to their sense of identity and the way formal care is provided and experienced. This study aims to explore the ageing and identity of people with ID and formal care. It is a qualitative study with two focus groups, in which 10 professionals from different areas who work daily with older people with ID took part. The data collected was thematically analysed. The results indicate that the participants considered the ageing of people with ID to be an earlier and more heterogeneous process than in the population without ID. They identified the main needs of people with ID as emotional, namely affection and safety, and medical, such as the need for ongoing specialised care. The issue of identity was little explored by the professionals, who revealed a certain lack of awareness of the importance of this dimension. The professionals consider that the identity of people with ID is strongly influenced by others and that there is a limited perception of ageing itself and the sense of identity. The results also show that paternalistic practices and infantilising attitudes are a barrier to the development and maintenance of a sense of identity and that person-centred practices facilitate the maintenance of identity. However, they found it difficult to implement person-centred practices. This study warns of the need to value identity in the ageing process of people with ID, calling for the implementation of more personalised practices. Encouraging the inclusion of identity in formal contexts, this study emphasises the need to improve formal care and the importance and relevance for today of studying the ageing process and sense of identity of people with ID.
