Abstract(s)
voluntariamente participaram no estudo.
The present work addresses the activities that were part of the internship carried out to obtain a master’s degree in Sports Sciences - Exercise and Health, throughout the academic year, as a physical exercise technician at the Santa Casa da Misericórdia da Covilhã, as well as the initiation into research. The purpose of the internship was to acquire professional experience in the field of physical exercise technician and develop skills such as communication and the ability to motivate people to engage in exercise. To achieve this, the internship involved the monitoring, teaching, and supervision of classes, as well as ensuring the smooth functioning of the hosting institution. As part of the internship process, a study was conducted to analyse the effects of home-based exercise on functional fitness, balance, and independence in elderly residents in the municipality of Covilhã. A training program was implemented, consisting of one weekly session over 12 weeks, with two assessments conducted before and after the training. The assessments included the Senior Fitness Test, the Berg Balance Scale, and the Barthel Index. The study group consisted of 10 individuals of both sexes (mean ± standard deviation: 83.40 ± 5.95 years of age, 1.54 ± 0.07 meters in height, 29.57 ± 7.88 body mass index), who voluntarily participated in the study. The results showed that although there were no significant differences, some elements demonstrated a positive response, with a decrease in body fat and an increase in muscle mass. In terms of individual response to balance and functional independence, there were scattered changes, with approximately half of the participants responding positively, with 5 individuals improving on the balance scale, while the majority remained unchanged in terms of functional independence. This research initiation work proved to be essential in supporting practice, contributing to complementing the training and activities carried out, in line with the overall objective.
