Abstract(s)
O estágio permitiu compreender o papel e a
The present report represents the conclusion of the Integrated Master's Degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences, at the University of Beira Interior. It is divided into two chapters, the first concerning the research component and the second the professional experience in community pharmacy. The first chapter, called “Assessment of knowledge on the use of oral contraceptives by female students at the University of Beira Interior” aimed to understand the knowledge of female students at the University of Beira Interior regarding the use of oral contraceptives; a survey was carried out for this purpose. Knowledge about the correct use of contraception is fundamental for the prevention of unwanted pregnancies. Like all hormonal contraceptive methods, oral contraceptives have associated risks and both contraceptive and non-contraceptive benefits. After the analysis of the 141 answers, it was possible to understand that oral contraceptives are the most used method (24.2%), followed by the male condom (11.3%) and the use of both contraceptive methods was also mentioned (8.2%). The mainly mentioned oral contraceptives are of 3rd or 4th generation, and 57% of the participants reported not experiencing adverse effects when starting them. Regarding the procedure when forgetting (66.3%) and the decrease in contraceptive effectiveness when vomiting and/or diarrhea occur (84.2%), it was found that, in general, there was a correct perception of these aspects. With regard to drug interactions, antibiotics were the most mentioned class of drugs, however, only 8.4% correctly identified the different classes of drugs that cause interactions. There is still some lack of knowledge related to the concomitant use with emergency contraception, periods of rest from the body to the medications and the occurrence of spotting. The results show that despite the existence of knowledge about oral contraceptives, greater transmission of information to university students about certain aspects is still necessary. Finally, Chapter II addresses the internship component in community pharmacy which took place at Farmácia Tavares, in Guarda. The internship allowed me to understand the role and the importance of community pharmacy in our society. In this chapter, the various activities developed and the different fields of intervention are also described.
