Os métodos tradicionais para a prática da diplomacia já não respondem totalmente às
necessidades da política externa idealizada pelos Estados nos dias de hoje. Esta
investigação surgiu com o objetivo de fazer chegar “luz” à importância de uma missão
diplomática na promoção da cultura e língua de um país, através da análise da
Embaixada de Portugal em Atenas.
Foram estudados os planos de atividades culturais da Embaixada de Portugal em
Atenas, entre 2018 e 2022. Todas as atividades culturais promovidas por esta
Embaixada são divulgadas no site oficial e redes sociais da missão, pelo que também
consideramos estas fontes. No período em análise, a missão diplomática portuguesa em
Atenas foi liderada por dois Embaixadores distintos.
Concluímos que a promoção da língua portuguesa é um interesse central na
planificação cultural da Embaixada de Portugal em Atenas. No entanto, os resultados
revelaram que, neste período, existiu uma preocupação desta missão diplomática em
estender o raio de influência da ação cultural da Embaixada a um leque diversificado de
setores culturais.
Estes resultados fornecem uma perspetiva valiosa para a compreensão do
funcionamento de uma missão diplomática e dos mecanismos e meios existentes para
estas procederem à promoção da língua portuguesa no estrangeiro.
Traditional methods for practising diplomacy no longer fully meet the needs of the foreign policy idealised by states today. The aim of this research is to shed light on the importance of a diplomatic mission in promoting a country’s culture and language by analysing the Embassy of Portugal in Athens. We studied the cultural activity plans of the Embassy of Portugal in Athens between 2018 and 2022. All the cultural activities promoted by this Embassy are publicised on the mission’s official website and social media, so we also considered these sources. During the period in question, the portuguese diplomatic mission in Athens was led by two different Ambassadors. We concluded that the promotion of the portuguese language is a central interest in the cultural planning of the Embassy of Portugal in Athens. However, the results revealed that, during this period, there was a concern on the part of this diplomatic mission to extend the radius of influence of the Embassy’s cultural action to a diverse range of cultural sectors. These results provide a valuable perspective for understanding the workings of a diplomatic mission and the mechanisms and means that exist for them to promote the portuguese language abroad.
