Abstract(s)
The present study deals with the influence of the perceived leadership effectiveness on the performance of nursing teams, in Portuguese hospitals’ contexts, as well as the role played by knowledge sharing and teams’ effectiveness in this relationship. The research follows a quantitative approach, through a descriptive, correlational and transversal study. The sample includes 139 responses from nurses who work in 2 Portuguese hospitals: Unidade Local de Saúde da Guarda - Hospital Sousa Martins, E.P.E. and Centro Hospitalar e Universitário da Cova da Beira. Data were collected through the application of a questionnaire developed for the purpose and organized into 2 sections: i) sociodemographic variables and ii) likert-type measurement scales designed to assess the effectiveness of leadership perceived by subordinate nurses, teams’ performance, teams’ effectiveness and knowledge sharing. Results show that the proposed model fits well with the data collected, thus confirming that knowledge sharing has a partial mediating effect on the influence of leadership effectiveness on the effectiveness of nursing teams and that, together, knowledge sharing and the effectiveness of nursing teams has an indirect mediating effect on the influence of leadership effectiveness on the performance of nursing teams. The indirect effect can be considered as total mediation, because the model shows the absence of a significant influence of leadership effectiveness on nursing teams’ performance. This research, thus, allows us to highlight that leadership effectiveness is a critical issue in management, because it indirectly influences the performance of work teams.
