Abstract(s)
Psiquiatria.
prestado a doentes do espetro psicótico.
Introduction: Mental illness is highly prevalent worldwide and is responsible for prominent levels of morbidity, having significant personal and socioeconomical impact. However, scientific knowledge is still lacking when compared to other kinds of disorders. Therefore, research in Psychiatry is very relevant. Schizophrenia still poses an etiologic and therapeutic challenge, so further study of better treatments is crucial. A very promising strategy is Physical Exercise (PE), already of proven benefit on various symptoms of schizophrenia and antipsychotic drug side effects. Aim: We addressed the knowledge as well as the PE prescribing habits of psychiatrists and general practitioners to their psychotic patients in the Beira Interior region. Methods: We performed a narrative literature review and an observational crosssectional study, based on the self-application of an anonymous online survey to psychiatrists and general practitioners in Beira Interior region. Results: We found high levels of scientific knowledge on PE and its prescription to patients with psychotic disorders. Improvements in insomnia, cognitive function and drug therapy adherence were among the most reported effects of PE. Conclusion: We observed a link between knowledge levels and prescription habits of PE to these patients among doctors. We also found beneficial effects of PE were frequently reported. Further studies with more robust methodologies are granted to optimize the desirable holistic biopsychosocial approach to patients in the psychotic spectrum.
