Abstract(s)
The multisensory therapy snoezelen consists in stimulating the senses through light, smell, touch, sound and vision, with the use of proper equipment to provide pleasure and well-being. This is a type of non-pharmacological intervention, which has a complementary treatment of psychopathological and physical problems. The results on the effects of this intervention are inconclusive. However suggest benefits in improving maladaptive behavior, welfare and problems of learning and development, among others. This study aims to analyze the impact of a program of five sessions multisensory stimulation snoezelen in older people. Participated in the study seven people aged between 67 and 85 years, institutionalized in a house with different mental health disorders: dementia, mild mental retardation and bipolar affective disorder. The instruments used were the Scale Cognitive Screening Montreal Cognitive Assessement, the Geriatric Depression Scale and a Behavior Observation Grid. The results suggest a diversity of effects, which rules out a pattern of impact of snoezelen in older people with psychopathology. However, we suggest potential beneficial effects of multisensory intervention in terms of emotions, behaviors and cognitive level. Noteworthy is also the need for more robust and consistent for investigations to analyze the processes and impact of this type of intervention that appear to be very different from individual to individual.
