Abstract(s)
This study is part of the project "Determinants of adaptation to the disease", which contributes to the assessment of the psychosocial factors of people with chronic diseases, who live daily with the demands imposed by them. The general objective of the present investigation is to evaluate the levels of treatment adherence and coping strategies in people with arterial hypertension, assisted at the Vagos Health Center. In this study, the questionnaires applied where the sociodemographic, the Treatment Adherence Measure (MAT) and the Brief Cope. 146 individuals with arterial hypertension participated, 74 men and 72 women, with an average age of 68.79 years. This is a correlational, quantitative, comparative and cross-sectional study. The main results obtained show significant diferences for adherence to treatment in age; and among some subscales of coping strategies, in age, gender, marital status and educational qualifications. Regarding the clinical characteristics, for coping strategies, there were differences in the time of diagnosis, existence of another chronic health problem and control of blood pressure. Associations between adherence to treatment and coping strategies were also found, namely positive correlations were found for the Active Coping and Positive Reinterpretation subscales, and negative correlations for the Self-blame and Denial subscales. The increase in knowledge regarding adherence and coping strategies is essential in the development of effective intervention programs that contribute to the patient's physical and psychological well-being in the long term.
