Abstract(s)
PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses). A
desafiantes.
Introduction: We are confronted with stressful situations in our daily life. This is even more common in highly competitive and extremely responsible environments, where people have successful past experiences and high expectations for themselves. Such circumstances seem to be particularly present in health contexts. Therefore, considering the importance of certain types of variables in this domain, and that university students, especially medical students, fall into that group, a Systematic Review of the Literature on emotional regulation, perfectionism and psychological distress was carry out, in order to understand the impact of these constructs. Objective: The general objective of this dissertation is to understand how emotional regulation and perfectionism are present and related to psychological distress in medical students. Methods: A Systematic Review of the Literature was conducted, following the guidelines of PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses). The search was made in two databases, B-On and PubMed, and we focused on articles published from January 2000 to December 2022, as well as the remaining eligibility criteria. Results: Of the 219 articles initially identified in the databases, only 3 were selected for full reading, and all those that did not meet the eligibility criteria were excluded. In general, there was agreement in the results of the analyzed studies. In fact, these seem to corroborate the understanding that medical students are a particularly susceptible population to present certain indicators in terms of mental health, and that there is great individual variability in the way individuals deal with certain emotions. In methodological terms, the investigations analyzed are quite similar, focusing on the evaluation of participants' responses to a variety of questionnaires and rating scales (self-report). Conclusions: It was possible to verify that the three constructs studied, emotional regulation, perfectionism and psychological distress, are associated and potentiate each other. In addition, it was noticed that these variables do not act independently and that there are other factors that also influence the way individuals, in this case students, deal with events that they perceive as stressful and challenging.
