Abstract(s)
prescritos.
Introduction: The use of antidepressant drugs, most commonly prescribed drugs for the treatment of depression, has been increasing in recent years. The diverse classes of antidepressants differ in their mechanism of action and also the adverse effects profile and potential drugs interactions. These aspects may influence the selection of antidepressant medications and the adherence of the patient to therapy. Goal: To characterize the profile of the use of antidepressants in Beira Interior in terms of socio-demographic and pharmacological variables. Material and methods: It was taken an observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study in the community pharmacies in the district of Guarda and Castelo Branco. It was used a convenience sample consisting of 404 users of antidepressant medication. Information on each patient was obtained by applying a questionnaire on socio-demographic and other on pharmacological characterization. Results: Of the 404 studied users, aged between 16 and 90 years, 312 were women (77%). The average age of people taking an antidepressant was of 55.6 years. Among the users of antidepressants 55.7% were taking a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). The three most widely prescribed drugs in that class were fluoxetine (34.7%), sertraline (24%) and escitalopram (22.2%). The users who were taking two or more drugs concurrently represented 16.1% of the total sample and tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) and monoamine oxidase inhibitors were the least used. For 51% of the patients, antidepressant treatment was prescribed by a general practitioner, who prescribed more SSRIs than TCAs in relation to medical specialists. Conclusion: Women use more antidepressants than men. The general practitioner prescribes more antidepressants than the psychiatrist or other medical experts. Monotherapy regimen is the most used and SSRIs are the most commonly prescribed antidepressants.
