Abstract(s)
This study analyses empirically the effect of economic growth on income inequality in developing countries. The empirical literature on this theme has not reached consensual results: although there is some evidence that confirms the Kuznets curve for developed countries, the relation between economic growth and inequality in developing countries is more complex. In this study, several regressions are estimated using panel data and fixed effects estimators. The results show that, in general, the economic growth rate has a negative moderate effect on income inequality in developing countries. When the sample is disaggregated in groups, the results show that the negative effect is more pronounced in Latin American and Caribbean countries, in autocratic countries and in colonized countries, which suggests that the institutional, economic and political characteristics of countries influence the growth-inequality relation.
