Abstract(s)
do Manual Diagnóstico e Estatístico de Transtornos Mentais 5.ª edição (Diagnostic and
Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders Fifth Edition, DSM-5).
no sono.
The present report was prepared within the scope of the Internship Curricular Unit and is intended to obtain the degree of Master in Pharmaceutical Sciences. It consists of two chapters: Chapter 1 corresponds to the research component, and Chapter 2 pertains to the internship report in Community Pharmacy. Chapter 1 addresses the potential of medicinal plants as a therapeutic alternative for the treatment of insomnia. It is widely recognized that good sleep quality plays a fundamental role in health and overall well-being, however, insomnia is a common sleep disorder. The prevalence of insomnia is a approximately 30% of the population, and 10% have symptoms that meet the criteria of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5). Quality of life is profoundly affected by insomnia due to associated sequelae, including impairments in cognition, mood, and functionality. Additionally, there is a bidirectional relationship with other disorders such as depression and anxiety. With the growing concern about the adverse effects of conventional medications, there is increasing interest in exploring substances derived from natural sources, such as medicinal plants, that can promove healthy sleep safely and effectively. Through the PubMed datebase, it was possible to identify plants that can be used as sleep aids. The research covers the identification of medicinal plants known and studied for their sedative and relaxing properties, their active constituents with anti-insomnia effects, possible underlying mechanisms, as well as reported adverse effects and precautions. Overall, plants presente benefits in improving the quantity and quality of sleep and may be a promising alternative therapy for insomnia. Therefore, the aim of the research componente was to identify, synthesize, and discuss possible herbal alternatives that can be used for the treatment of insomnia. Chapter 2 pertains to the curricular internship in Community Pharmacy, carried out at Farmácia Barreiro, located in Chaves, from September 12, 2023, to January 31, 2024, under the supervision of Dr. Teresa Barreiro. This chapter explores the operation of the pharmacy and the theoretical knowledge, as well as the practical experiences I was able to gain throughout the internship.
